Dog Harnesses

There are many different types of dog harnesses and leashes. Some of these are made to make it easier to walk your dog. Others are made to help restrain your dog in the back seat of your car. Click on underlined titles to see harnesses that are available for sale. For now, they are only available locally as they are inexpensive. So far, I have found that mailing costs may be prohibitive, though I can look into how much they would cost to send if needed.

Petsafe makes a leash that attaches around your waist to leave your hands free. This is helpful if you run with your dog. They also make training leads and three types of harnesses: Gentle leader, Easy Walk, and a 3 in 1 Harness.

Training leads are leashes from 20 – 30 feet long which are helful to train your dog from a distance. These may be used, for instance, when you are training your dog to come or to follow other commands from a distance.

The Gentle leader works by applying gentle steady pressure to a dog’s nose and muzzle when they pull on the leash, redirecting their head and body to stop the pulling action. It is surprisingly effective and will help even a small person to walk a big dog. I use this when walking my son’s brown labrador retriever who is over 100 pounds.

The Easy Walk Harness works by redirecting pulling behavior through a front leash attachment that applies gentle pressure to the dog’s shoulders when they pull, steering them to the side. This front-clip design provides control without putting pressure on the dog’s trachea, like a collar might. When the dog stops pulling, the pressure is released, creating a positive reinforcement cycle where the dog learns to walk calmly by your side. This harness worked quite well when I used it with my large untrained pitbull who would strain at a regular leash and collar and pull me along.

I have not tried the 3 in 1 petsafe harness which has places to attach a leash either in the front of the harness to work like the Easy Walk harness or on top of the harness to work like a regular leash that you would attach to a collar. In this latter location, it attaches to the vest like harness which does not choke the dog like a regular collor may. The third application of this harness is to attach your dog’s harness to a seat belt in the car.

Julius K9 Harnesses are generally more expensive than other harnesses but are chosen because they are very sturdy made of heavy-duty, quality fabric and strong metal rings.
